my mother would
in mid-March
when gray hinted
at fading take out
a ceramic bowl
measure flour sugar
salt and soda flat
in the measuring cup
and spoon but butter
and shortening not so
those heaping mounds
on the tablespoon
worked into beads
then of course raisins
and caraway seeds
and X marks the spot
of buttermilk folded
and turned all out
into a cast iron pan
the less worked
the better so true
so it bakes rustic-like
and crusty sweet
