She taught me to sing,
showed me first
to breathe deep
from the toes,
to expand
capacity…
So much
shame abiding,
I never held
my voice
precious.
She gave me:
her confidence,
her small studio,
helped me
sustain
one breath,
to the next,
feet planted
on hard wood,
knees only
slightly bent.
I learned
the disciplined
solace
of breathing,
the structured
beauty of notes
on a page,
how rhythm
unfolded.
