It was called laboring down, this process
brand new to me, of waiting for the head
of the child to keep dropping. All day long
we waited for his arrival and he dropped
when he wanted and no earlier, a head
so full of hair all heartburn was worth it.
They don't tell you there in the hospital:
the laboring down doesn't stop at birth.
All his life you will labor down, down,
through the deep sighs and eye rolls,
through failures and broken hearts,
you labor down through it all, again
and again. This is what they do not say:
that giving birth? It happens every day.
