April 14: Warrior Worrier

No mother wants a child to suffer

no cut cleansed with peroxide

no sizzling on blisters scraping

shoe against growing heel

No mother wants to suffer

no bicycle wants to topple

but complies as the child pulled

by gravity and adrenaline points

downhill the mother in the park

warrior worrier retracing steps

Mothers too want relief a safe child

home in bed to get his rest our prayer

we say whispered wordless and

without logic the door awaits

the child past curfew the driveway

a car safely arrived the closet

a coat even half hung up

Mothers know this their bodies

remembering not the lunches

nor loads of laundry nor the rituals

that soon will fall into ruin

not the milk almost empty

the box of cookies left empty

least of all the crumbs

scattering the countertop

looking up for their creators

scattered belonging to us all
