Middle school
science trip
my least favorite
subject of all
scantrons textbooks
lab partners puberty
unending ten minute
bus ride to
Skokie Lagoons
all of us huddled
specimen jars
sludgy water
layered with life
held in hand
jagged reeds
the spring sun
at our backs
marsh edge
immersion between
dueling lily pads
bluegill and bass
dart away cap it
tight swiping palms
across prairiegrass
back on that bus
and off up to the lab
one dallying droplet
under a slide
awaiting
adjusting
that eyepiece
peering inside
